Poisoned Rationality Special Edition (9)

Poisoned Rationality Special Edition
**contest portion is now closed**

Author Rachel Vincent is with us today on Poisoned Rationality--talking about her YA novel series Soul Screamers and offering one lucky commenter a Soul Screamers t-shirt and copy of My Soul to Keep!

Synopsis: Kaylee and Nash discover that one of his football teammates is addicted to Demon's Breath, a dangerous Netherworld substance that shouldn't even be available in the human world. To save their friends from insanity--and possibly death--they must figure out how the Demon's Breath got into their world and somehow dispose of it, as well as cutting off the supply--without socially alienating themselves. And in the course of their investigation, Kaylee discovers a deeper plot by a powerful Netherworld demon to open a path between the worlds and pull humans into the Netherworld so that he can steal their souls and imprison their bodies. Along the way, she also discovers someone close to her has been hiding a deadly addiction as well...

The Soul Screamers Universe so far has shown us bean sidhes, Reapers, Demons, leanan sidhes and Sirens--will we be seeing any other supernatural types in coming novels? Is there a particular type of supernatural being you like the best?

Yes, in fact, MY SOUL TO STEAL features a teenage Nightmare, and MY SOUL TO KEEP (book 3) features several species I just plain made up. As for the ones I like best, I tend to like certain characters, rather than specific species of creature. I love Kaylee, of course, and Emma and Tod are favorites. And I had a ton of fun with Sabine, whom you'll meet in MSTSteal.

My Soul to Keep touches on some very serious, and dangerous, issues such as substance abuse and responsibility for your actions, when you first began drafting My Soul to Take did you think you wanted to go in this direction or did it grow while writing My Soul to Save?
I knew almost from the beginning that I wanted to confront some serious issues (in fantasy guises), but the specific situation in MY SOUL TO KEEP was actually inspired by one particular scene in MY SOUL TO SAVE. MSTKeep let me discuss substance abuse and addiction, the loss of choice and free will, and the willingness to forgive. Also, the idea that first love may not be true love--which goes hand in hand with the forgiveness issue.

Is there a trope or cliche in paranormal books that you absolutely won't have any part of? Any one you are particularly fond of reading?
No. I think that if it's handled well, there's nothing that can't be revisited. But again, the writing needs to be phenomenal and a new twist on an old idea always helps.

That said, I prefer to cut my own path through those woods. :)

Did you find anything interesting or different about the road to publication for a YA novel vs. publication for mainstream novels?

Um... The road to publication of my first YA wasn't much different, but the marketing is completely different. The library market and school circuit aren't anywhere near as critical for adult books as they are for YA, and I find it much easier to reach my adult market online than it is to reach my target YA readers online.

Has there ever been a time when you read a novel, or heard of a concept and thought "I wish I could have thought of that first!" or "I think I can do that differently...."?
Oh, sure. But I take that as my signal to run the other way. Find ideas of my own. :)
